An adult faces many challenges. First and foremost is how to find a job and make a decent living. In other words, when it comes to taking charge of your life, employment is at the top of the list. But if you have been looking for work or seeking to make a job change, you know from experience that employment is much more than just finding a job.
Meaningful employment involves thoughtful career selection and thorough preparation for success. First and foremost, employees must be prepared to adjust and adapt to the demands of learning a new job and coping with employer-employee relations. Then, employees must identify and pursue the opportunity to grow beyond an entry-level position through pursuing a career path that matches who they are, taking into account their interests, talents, and learning skills. Finding the kind of employment where they can be successful requires that they have a prepared mind.

Developing a prepared mind is the key to finding and keeping employment. Having a prepared mind isn’t about knowing “stuff.” Having your mind prepared means knowing how you learn—how you specifically take in the world around you in a way that works for you, how you make sense of what you encounter, and how you choose to respond in any situation. Engaging in learning that prepares your mind helps you develop life skills and strengthens your judgment and decision-making skills.
Learning is central to who you are as a human being. It defines you; it affects your sense of self; it shapes how others perceive you; and, very importantly, it determines your economic future. Adults who know how to learn are building a “bridge to the future which prepares them to keep up with the world as it changes, compete in a global economy, and exercise their rights and responsibilities of citizenship” (Equipped for the Future Standards, USDOL).
